1973–1977
I had a great 4 years in the Marine Corp – everything I did was was a miracle and an incredible experience.
I had an uncle that was in the Marines around 1967 or 68. I was just 10 years younger than him and always looked up to him. He went to Vietnam and I watched him pack before he flew off.
We were living in Vermont at that time. I worked in high school for the Ethan Allen Furniture Company. I was 18 and not college material. I talked to some guys that had been there for 20 years; that was not going to happen to me. I was looking for something else. I joined the Marine Corps on December 26, 1973. I was a bonus baby, got paid $2,500 and committed to four years in the infantry.
After boot camp and Infantry Training Regiment I received my dress blues and interviewed with the General of the base who wanted to help me choose my Military Occupation Specialty. Most of my company went to Vietnam, but I received orders to go to Sea School, an elite assignment. I finished 3rd in Sea School which should have given me the option of choosing where I wanted to go. I was looking forward to going to France or Spain, but was assigned to the USS Kitty Hawk stationed across the bay at Coronado Island.
I was assigned as a Brig Sentry and guard of nuclear weapons. I was promoted and became an Admiral’s Orderly in the Comm Carrier Group 1 in San Diego. Then, I was back on the ship and in charge of the Brig, and Sergeant of the Guard in charge of nuclear weapons. At the end of my two-year tour, I was chosen to return to San Diego as a Sea School Instructor.
In San Onofre, California. I began to run, enter races, did well, and eventually the Marine Corps asked me to run on the West Coast Marine Marathon team. I ran marathons and afterward would visit with young men and women about joining the Corps.
After my Honorable Discharge, I enrolled at Southwest Texas State University and upon graduation I began a Private Investigation firm.
My biggest regret in the Marine Corps is that I did not go into battle. {02-04-2014 • Canyon Lake, TX}
